Just Hate is a 2009 work by Kende: mixed media on wood, 140 × 110 cm. It is one of the oldest in the catalogue, among the first in which the writing gesture moves from the wall to the panel.
The ground is sand-coloured wood, stained with rust. Over it, wide grey semi-transparent brushstrokes: they are letters, enlarged and layered until they look like shadows on a wall. In the centre the paint is deeply scratched, with thin incised lines running down alongside the brown drips.

At the bottom, almost on the edge, two words in dark red capitals: JUST HATE, closed by a full stop. Paint drips from every letter. They are the only legible text in the painting and they sit in the least important place, at the very bottom, like words left on a wall at the last moment. The full stop ends the sentence without explaining anything.
2009 still belongs to Kende’s European season, between London, Amsterdam and Barcelona, and the panel keeps its rhythm: a few wide, fast passes, one colour for the large letters and one for the words. From the same year comes Erased Memory, where the letters grow so dense they become a single black line. Three years later Hate takes up half of the title, but on a wall filled to the last centimetre. The way of layering the mark that begins here has a name: Dissolutionism.
The original version of Just Hate has been sold. Limited-edition fine art prints are not available, but you can see the artwork on your wall with Your Room, or write me for a commissioned work, telling me what you like about this painting.
