R, 2010 — a work built around a single letter. In graffiti culture, letters are often perceived only in part: enlarged sections, fragmented details, segments that elude full comprehension due to the monumental scale of urban interventions. With R, Kende brought this principle into painting, isolating a single letter and transforming it into an autonomous subject.
The work dialogues directly with No Reason (2010), where a large cut-out letter emerged from the composition like a fragment of a word impossible to read in its entirety. In R The reduction is even more radical: the letter is no longer a detail within the image, but becomes the image itself. The calligraphic gesture loses its function of writing to take on that of form, rhythm, and visual presence.
